{"id":547,"date":"2020-07-28T21:01:34","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T21:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ec2-34-224-182-223.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/dermatology.healthcare.pro\/?p=547"},"modified":"2020-10-02T15:45:14","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T15:45:14","slug":"s-aureus-agr-virulence-tied-to-atopic-dermatitis-in-infants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-34-224-182-223.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/dermatology.healthcare.pro\/index.php\/2020\/07\/28\/s-aureus-agr-virulence-tied-to-atopic-dermatitis-in-infants\/","title":{"rendered":"S. aureus Agr Virulence Tied to Atopic Dermatitis in Infants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Expression of functional Agr system in&nbsp;<em>S. aureus<\/em>&nbsp;needed for epidermal colonization in mice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skin colonization by&nbsp;<em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>&nbsp;is associated with the risk for developing atopic dermatitis (AD), and infants who do not develop AD primarily exhibit acquisition of dysfunctional mutations in the&nbsp;<em>S. aureus<\/em>&nbsp;quorum-sensing system, according to a study published in the July 8 issue of&nbsp;<em>Science Translational Medicine<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yuumi Nakamura, M.D., Ph.D., from the Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan, and colleagues performed whole-genome sequencing of&nbsp;<em>S. aureus<\/em>&nbsp;strains isolated from the cheek skin of 268 Japanese infants at 1 to 6 months old to examine the role in AD development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers found that regardless of AD outcome, about 45 percent of infants were colonized with&nbsp;<em>S. aureus<\/em>&nbsp;at 1 month. At 6 months of age, skin colonization with&nbsp;<em>S. aureus<\/em>&nbsp;was associated with an increased risk for developing AD. Strains from 6-month-old infants who did not develop AD primarily exhibited acquisition of dysfunctional mutations in the&nbsp;<em>S. aureus<\/em>&nbsp;Agr quorum-sensing system.
